Colored Paper for Layout and Design
Although there are a host of computer based design and layout programs, sometimes it is best to do layout drafts using colored specialty paper. It can be a good way to give a designer a concrete idea about what you want, especially if you are not computer literate with design software. These mockups can also be used as presentation tools.
If you have ever worked with designers before you know it can be hard to communicate your vision to them. Using specialty paper to create a mock version of what you want takes a lot of the ambiguity out of the process. It lets you decide things like color scheme, text size, and general layout. Then all the designer has to do is use a computer to bring your vision to life. By being so clear about what you want you can reduce the number of drafts necessary to perfect the product. It’s a great way participate in the design process without any formal design training.
Trying to communicate your aesthetic vision to someone else can be hard, so why not show them instead? If you do not know the tools and terminology of design use a visual tool to communicate. Using colored specialty paper allows you to reclaim the design process.

Specialty Paper for the Office
If you think that the only kind of paper you need to stock in your office is regular printer paper, you should think again. Although standard printable paper is important you should also stock some colored specialty papers to aid in organization.
Although the term ‘pink slip’ has negative associations, using a color code system for documents around the office is a good organizational system. If employees are getting a lot of documents in a day it is easier to sort them if they know memos are in one color, paystubs in another and other documents in other colors. You can use the same color code when posting fliers around the office.
Color coding ensures a reduction in the number of documents lost or misfiled. It can save your company a lot of time and can even prevent potentially costly errors. Although making the switch can take a bit of effort, once a color coding system is in place for documents it will become second nature to employees. A little effort now can save you a lot of headache later.
Colored paper can also prove useful when sending out festive documents to clients or employees, such as party invitations or news bulletins.

Buying Printable Paper in Bulk
Bulk shopping has become something of an American pastime. So-called big box stores sell food and household items in contains four or five times the size of conventional supermarket packages. I, for one, am always weary about buying such items because I am not sure I will ever eat 10lbs of peanuts. Some items, however, I do choose to buy in bulk. Printable paper is one the smartest items to purchase in bulk.
Buying printable paper in bulk makes sense for many reasons. The most obvious is the cost. Buying large amounts of printable paper online will save you money. Even if it takes you 5 years to go through all that paper it won’t go bad. It is easy to store by your computer or printer and you will never need to run out to an office supply store when you suddenly find yourself out of paper. Unlike certain items which you can get at most 24-hour stores, if you find yourself without printer paper during non-office hours you may not be able to get some until the start of the next business day.
Take it from me, someone who doesn’t consider himself a bulk shopper, buying printable paper in bulk is ideal.

Promotional Materials
For many of us who are involved in causes such as political parties, charities, or community outreach a big part of our job is spreading the word. That means talking to people, writing out to elected officials, and spreading printed materials. Colored papers are useful for these printed materials because they add a visual pop.
Printing out pamphlets is always a good start. You can use simple printable paper or something more colorful. Simply writing what the cause is, where and when it meets, and some other vital information is all it takes, though the nicer the pamphlet the better. Then you can leave them in people’s mailboxes, under their doors, or post them on community bulletin boards. You can also hand them out to people you talk to so they have something to remind them of your conversation and they have the information they need to get involved.
Although the information is the most important aspect of the pamphlet its visual appeal is a close second. People will often breeze right over information that does not visually pull them in. That is why colored paper, colored envelopes and other aesthetic concerns are important. So next time you are trying to affect change, bring some promotional papers.

Printing Your Own Photographs
With digital cameras here to stay, film is becoming increasingly dated. It is expensive, bad for the environment and takes a long time to develop. Although digital camera have been around for a long time, until recently, pictures printed at home were still of mediocre (at best) quality. Better cameras, printers and specialty papers are changing all that.
With powerful photo printers becoming cheaper and photo sharing on site like Facebook and Twitter, many people are printing their photos at home. Photo paper is more expensive than printable paper for text but pales in comparison to the cost of traditional photo development. It is also a lot more convenient to just upload a picture, or see one on Facebook, and just print it out.
With printers becoming so cheap almost anyone can now print photos at home. Print wallet photos of your family, vacation photos to show friends or portraits for your desk at work. You can also do larger scale projects like sending photo holiday cards or creating photo albums as gifts to others. You would be surprised how many uses you will find for photo printing once you get into the habit. Just make sure you have enough high gloss specialty paper on hand, because you’re going to need it!
